DSLR Camera of the Year 2011

« Back to news

News image

Our penultimate award is for the DSLR Camera of the Year 2011. Somewhat overshadowed by the rise of compact system cameras, DSLRs are still the staple product for the big two of Canon and Nikon. But it’s the young upstart Sony that most caught our eye in 2011 with the launch of the A77, the premium product in the company’s innovative range and the deserved winner of our 6th award for 2011.

“The Sony A77 is a big leap forward for Sony’s DSLR range, offering a feature-set, handling and performance that beats its main rivals. The new 24.3 megapixel sensor offers greatly increased resolution without impacting on low-light performance or operational speed, while the OLED viewfinder is simply the best EVF that we’ve ever had the pleasure of using. The inclusion of full 1080p movies, built-in GPS, 12fps burst shooting, dual control dials, top-panel LCD and an excellent 3-way rear screen make the A77 our new favourite prosumer DSLR.”

Congratulations to Sony and the A77!

ACDSee Pro 5 is the fifth instalment of ACD Systems tagging and editing program, which is designed to improve the photographer's workflow and give them an easier life. This new software tool aims to include everything for the post-processing of your digital photos. New features include a smart sharpener, split toning, dodge and burn, digital effects, a new tagging option involving colours, batch export and removal of metadata. Priced at £150 / $240, can ACDSee Pro 5 compete with the multitude of similar programs on the market today?

Welcome

Installation of ACDSee Pro 5 is very fast, although on the website, once the activation code has been input, we had to register and then type in a verification code that was emailed to us. Despite the extra security, it doesn't take that long to get through everything and we were opening the program around 5 minutes later.

Manage

In a similar way to Lightroom, ACDSee Pro 5 is laid out in different sections: 5 to be precise. The layout of all sections is simplistic with no large flashy icons. Instead, ACDSee have opted for text and plenty of it. In the Manage section, which is the first one that opens up, to the left is the navigation system and although it's reminiscent of opening My Computer on Windows, there's a nice white band striking through the selected folder. To the right are a number of organisational options such as number ratings for importance, coloured labels as well as metadata.

Import

After loading your pictures in, hovering over one will bring up a small preview of it. In the bottom left corner is the first picture or subsequent selected pictures and their corresponding histogram and EXIF data.

View

Switching to the View section brings up all the pictures as small thumbnails along the bottom and the selected picture in an ultra large window. There's a small, very sensitive slider in the bottom-right to zoom in and check focus. Next to the slider is a number of zoom settings that go up to a whopping 10,000%. There's a 1:1 button and fit to screen.

There are also a few options in the bottom left corner of the preview window. Simple editors such as rotate and scroll are available as well as setting an external editor.

Once you've checked the focus of the pictures, you can add them to an image basket. Any of these checked images then line up in a thumbnail gallery along the bottom of the screen.

Develop

Opening the Develop section is like opening Adobe Bridge. It's laid out differently (there are three tabs at the top for Tuning, Detail and Geometry) but all the features are there such as white-balance correction, lighting, split tone and curves. You can also do an all round clean up with the General tab that houses exposure, highlights and fill lights, contrast and vibrance.

Develop - Geometry

The sliders are sensitive but not overly so. The adjustments they make are very sympathetic to the picture. There's also an automatic setting that you can activate by either clicking in the picture or sliding the pointer depending on the action you're performing. White-balance will also sample from any point in the picture that you click on.

Sharpen

Flick over to the Detail tab and here you can sharpen, remove noise and reduce chroma. To say that the sharpening system in the Detail tab is sublime is putting it gently. In fact, we're going to use this for all our sharpening in the future. As well as the amount, radius and threshold normally seen in Unsharp Mask, there's also a Mask option which increases the intensity of the sharpening in a similar way to adjusting the opacity on a layer.

Edit

Once the image has been developed, you can move onto the Edit screen. On this page you can do more stuff that's available in a main editing suite such as dodge and burn, colour balance, levels, and curves. We thought that this was getting strung out - going through all the different sections - so we were relieved to see that the Edit page has sharpening and noise reduction here too.

Online

The final Online section sends you to an internet site that allows you to upload your pictures to ACDSee's secure server and it allows you 2Gb of space for free.

Buying the best digital camera for family use can be tricky. There are a lot of choices available in the market today and you have to know what specific features to look out for in order to get your money's worth as well as your family's nod of approval. Don't fret, though, as you can never go wrong when you buy a Canon-made unit.

With budget and value for money in check, here are some of the best Canon digital cameras that you can purchase for family use:

Canon PowerShot A710 IS

The fact that it's eye candy is just the icing on the cake. The A710's superior 6x zoom, 7.1 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD, autofocus and manual focus modes, 4x digital zoom and excellent glass lens make it a great buy. Everyone in your family will also love the Canon PowerShot A710 IS' clean user interface, red eye reduction option and the fact that it only uses two AA batteries.

Canon PowerShot A640

This tasteful, 10 megapixel thing of beauty is a great investment. With a 2.5 inch LCD you can swivel, an easy-to-understand user interface, accurate viewfinder and good lens which can spur attractive color and the right skin tones, the Canon A640 is just what you need for family reunions.

Canon PowerShot A570 IS

If you're looking for a camera that you can also use to take quick movie clips, the Canon PowerShot A570 is a steal. Its movie mode can deliver quality video and you can easily review that recently captured clip of your baby's first steps. This 7.1 megapixel camera has a face detection focus mode, adjustable flash power and optical viewfinder. You can also customize the Print/Share button, giving you the upper hand on how to control your digital camera.

Canon PowerShot SD40 Digital ELPH

Don't let the long name distract you. This one's a favorite especially among families that have teenagers. The compact, 7 megapixel SD40 comes in 4 attractive colors --- "Twilight Sepia", "Precious Rose", "Noble Blue" and "Olive Grey" --- which will certainly appeal to the young ones. Features include the DIGIC III processor function, which means that less battery power is drained and shutter lag is reduced. It also uses the Face Detection technology so if you want to take portraits on a lazy Sunday, this camera will do the trick.

Canon Digital Camera - A Camera With High Performance

The Canon digital camera is a camera of high performance level since it can capture quality images not only close up shots but for street and other kinds of shots. This is because of its high performance lenses. Buying this gadget is a guarantee that the unit is one of the finest in the market today.

Because of its quality tools, the camera can take effective, pleasing, tender and smoother pictures and images. This kind of camera is best suited to everybody- professional or non-professional.

Canon cameras may either be canon rebel or power shot digital cameras. The canon rebel is the most brilliant of the many models produced by Canon. Although it is smaller and even if lighter, the unit has modes on extra focus in order to capture images more clearly and accurately.

The power shot has both the manual and auto focus which has the capacity of storing images. You can better have a better screen even if the battery used is a lithium battery.

The canon products have high quality tools and features. The units come with accessories such as telephoto lenses, AC adaptor, and external flash with broad lens angle and a portable case.

Buying these items is worth your money. Canon products are the simplest items that suit individual needs. You'll not regret having this item since the performance is all good and effective.

Buying online is the best means of purchasing the unit. Online companies use a straight delivery method. This means that these companies do not have delivery charges. There are companies that do charge for the delivery for the shipment of the items purchased. If this is the case, it is advisable to find out how shipment and delivery are made. Find out too what is the strategy used in case the items purchased have defects.

Online shopping is with the use of credit cards and if ever there are problems encountered these can be resolved at the earliest possible time with a money back guarantee. So, you are better secured from thieves or robbers when you shop offline.

Which Canon Digital Camera Is Right For You?

If your wondering which Canon digital camera is right for you, then you've obviously made a decision already. You've decided to limit your search to Canon. That's not a bad choice, and some would argue it's a really good one. Others wouldn't. For the record, I like Canon, and have been happy with several Canon products over the years. There are plenty of good reasons for both sides of this argument.

Canon has grown into the rather enviable position of being the digital camera manufacturer with the biggest product line that appeals to an ever growing demographic of photographers. Everyone from the digital camera grandmas and 'pas, to prosumer photographers, to the pros crowding the top sports venues, to the paparazzi scum harassing all the big celebrities. It's an eclectic and diverse group of photo hounds to be sure, and Canon has the camera for everyone of them.

In the ultra compact category, they have cameras like the PowerShot SD1000 Digital Elph, and the PowerShot SD750 Digital Elph. These are both popular and reliable sellers for the YouTube, FaceBook and MySpace fan groups. The Elphs are extremely easy to use, tiny, and portable. Their image quality may not be the best, but for loading to your favorite websites and emailing to your friends, the pics are more than adequate.

The slightly larger compact category has even more choices for Canon fans. The PowerShot A570IS is a good choice. It includes image stabilization, and face recognition for better focus. Megapixels are abundant at 7.1, but not overly done for the sake of marketing hype. Consumers are becoming more aware, that any camera under $300 with more than 7 megapixels is just a waste of pixels and dollars.

How to Find the Best Canon Digital Cameras for Your Needs

There are so many Canon cameras to choose from. But how do you find the best Canon digital cameras for you? It can be difficult to get a clear sense of what's on offer from a big company like Canon when you're not familiar with all the jargon.

It's important to be able to separate the sales lingo from the facts, and make a choice that's right for you, not someone else's bank balance! So I want to give you a quick starting guide to who Canon actually are, what they offer and what some of their best cameras are.

So, what sort of company is Canon?

Basically, they're an enormous Japanese corporation who make lots of imaging and optical products. They are the market leaders in producing digital cameras, along with Nikon (each having about 40% of the market).

You can buy compact cameras or DSLR's from Canon. The best Canon digital cameras should last you for many years and provide a fantastic tool that will not become obsolete any time soon.

Canon DSLR's are named with the suffix 'EOS', for example the Canon EOS 550D. This abbreviation simply refers to a technology that makes it possible to have no mechanical links between a camera's body and the lens.

The first EOS digital camera that Canon turned out was the D30 back in 2000. Quite a few more have followed! There are also lots of great compact cameras made by Canon.

Find the best Canon digital cameras by choosing which category to look in.

So, to keep things simple, there are essentially 4 main categories of Canon camera to choose from.

1. Compact cameras
2. Beginner DSLR cameras
3. Prosumer DSLR cameras
4. Professional DSLR cameras

Your choice depends on the type of photography you'd like to do. Work out how the requirements you have translate into specifications.

For example, do you want to make large poster prints? You'll need a large sensor with plenty of MP's. Perhaps you find yourself taking lots of shots when the light is failing but get annoyed when pictures come out blurry. Look for a good ISO range and good performance at the higher settings. Do you enjoy wildlife photography? Look for a fast shutter speeds. Perhaps you like taking little movies? More and more cameras enable this.

1. Compacts. If you want everything to be as simple as possible and are not interested in stretching the creative potential of photography, a compact camera is perhaps the best option. The best Canon digital cameras in this category are increasingly excellent quality. I personally really like the Canon Powershot SD 4000 IS. It has a 10MP sensor, large range of focal length and strong build quality.

2. Beginner DSLR. Perhaps you would like something a step up from a basic compact. Maybe you need to produce images with better detail for larger prints. Perhaps it's important that you can alter the lenses for greater variety in focal length. Or perhaps you're just starting to really like this whole photography thing! A beginner DSLR would be perfect. Canon offer several excellent models.

Personally I think the Canon EOS 550D is a great all-rounder. It has a very large 18.7 MP sensor which can turn out highly detailed prints suitable for large format printing. The light metering is accurate making it easy to take good pics and the large ISO range opens up low light photography for you very nicely.

3. Prosumer DSLR. Getting a bit more serious? Started to notice one or two details on your existing DSLR that could serve you a bit better? The best Canon Digital s for you to look at might be those in their prosumer range. A good example would be the Canon 40D. It's very popular and offers photography enthusiasts an excellent quality camera. For me, its best asset is probably the extremely good performance it delivers at higher ISO settings, sacrificing very little in image quality at these faster speeds.

4. Professional DSLR. Are you prepared to splash out a healthy sum of money on a really top-notch professional piece of equipment? The very best Canon digital cameras belong in the professional category and provide amazing quality and specifications.

The Canon EOS 1D Mark IV is widely praised, though I can't say I've had the pleasure of trying it myself yet! It has a superb full frame sensor, can shoot 10 frames/second (!), has amazing autofocus and an unbelievable ISO range. Only purchase a camera like this if you will definitely use and enjoy it. If you can afford to get one, go for it, but I'm jealous.

It all depends on what you want to do with the camera and if you need something small and lightweight to carry in a pocket or a purse. If you plan to carry a camera case, you can look at the EOS models. These cameras are larger than the compact cameras, but the image quality is superior.

Canon Digital Cameras Problems

Canon digital cameras problems exist in every Canon camera, but that is typical of any camera from any manufacturer. Canon has had some issues with the EOS 5D because of poor color as well as the inability for the camera to handle dark and light images in one picture. Not everyone reports this problem, but some users were not happy with this problem.

Another problem includes the EOS 1D Mark III, which is said to have some flaws in focusing. Another reported problem is the weight of some of the cameras. Although most of the Canon cameras are lightweight, some are a little heavier because of the design or the battery used.

Canon also issued a statement back in 2005 stating that some of the CCDs that were used caused images to become distorted or not visible. This problem comes from the wiring becoming undone because of humidity and high heat. This problem affected the Digital IXUS II, V3 and the PowerShot A310, A75, A60, A300 and the A70 digital cameras. Free repairs were made for people that experienced these problems. This problem has since been corrected and is no longer a problem for Canon camera users.

Canon digital cameras problems are far and in between. Most of the problems found with Canon cameras were found to be user error more so than an error found the camera itself. There are many reviews for all Canon cameras. They do not present any serious problems that cannot be corrected by adjusting the settings on the camera menu.

Canon digital cameras problems also include the price. Many people have found some of the prices a bit steep for Canon cameras. This is to be expected though for a high quality camera. If you want quality images, the technology does cost more than a camera that does not utilize the same technology.

Canon Digital Camera Review - PowerShot's Magical Movies, Stunning Stills

There are many different sorts of Canon digital cameras available on the market. Canon has been manufacturing cameras for several years and its digital cameras are some of the best for the price. The current digital cameras that Canon offers include the Canon EOS series and the Canon Powershot series. The Canon 5D Mark II digital camera is the 1st EOS digital SLR camera to have both video capture and still capture. This Canon 5D camera includes all of the latest upgrades as previous models were lacking in some particular critical areas compared to rival's products.

The camera now has a 21.2 megapixel sensor which is particularly fascinating for those that like to shot professional quality. The resolution is the most recent at A900. This camera can be considered a premium digital camera. The Canon Powershot is an example of the most well liked Canon digital camera available for your average picture taker. One of the latest Powershot models, as of March 2009, is the Canon Powershot A480. The body was built to be in a more normal camera style. The sensor resolution has been increased to 10 mega pixels and the camera shoots with a marginally wider angle then before. There are also five more scene modes to selected from rather than ten.

As with lots of the Canon products is has face and motion detection and will adjust the settings to capture these subjects. The controls and present modes have been extended to you can have more suppleness using your own settings or shooting in tricky locations. It is possible to set the contrast, saturation, color adjustments, sharpness and shutter time by hand. The Canon digital camera SD1100 IS was engineered to deal with the new image stabilization system so its edges are software and slightly thicker then the previous models. There's also an optical viewfinder, which is beginning to become less common in digital cameras.

It includes a built in optical image stabilization, 8 megapixel still mode, optical viewfinder, 2.5 inch LCD screen, face detection, 3x optical zoom, and 30 frames per second picture mode to name only a few features.Face detection is really the latest feature for digital cameras and all of Canon's new models have face as well as motion detection. You can mix multiple overlapping shots into one long photo.Canon's digital cameras are always offering the gambles features for price and there 2 ranges of EOS and Powershot provide camera options for your professional photographers as well as the more general picture taker. They continue to be a major player in the camera industry and as long as they focus on quality they will continue to do so.
